Aiala Barr received her B.Sc. in Mathematics, Statistics and Computer studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel and later taught there and at Tel Aviv University. She then moved to the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, where she earned an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Statistics. She taught Statistics at Wits, and later was a Professor of Statistics at the University of South Africa. Dr. Barr authored several statistics study guides (UNISA is the largest correspondence university in the world), and consulted in diverse field, including studies concerning meteorology, lottery tickets and power generation.

In Canada Aiala Barr worked in industry since 1992, initially at a company providing information services to the insurance industry, and then as the biostatistician of St. Michael's Hospital and the Canadian Heart Research Centre doing medical and pharmaceutical research.

Since 1995 Dr. Barr is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. Her research interests include bivariate and multivariate discrete distributions, multiple comparison procedures and data modeling. She has published 19 refereed papers and over 50 technical publications.
